Pets became a part of my life once again after I got married. At that time, my wife was conducting animal experiments in a laboratory. When two guinea pigs managed to survive the blood extraction process, she brought them home. I constructed a steel mesh cage for them. One day, I took them out to soak up some sunlight and fenced them with steel mesh. I left briefly to retrieve something from the house. Upon my return, to my dismay, the fence had been knocked over and the guinea pigs had vanished. I couldn’t help but feel a slight twinge of guilt.
Before we had children, we enjoyed the companionship of rabbits and tropical fish. With extensive research and consideration, we ultimately decided to introduce a dog into our family dynamic. Our choice fell upon a Keeshond, whose gentle and alert nature aligned with our lifestyle. Following two years of experience, we added a Pomeranian to our furry family. They remained with us after we had our son. Despite relocating several times across different states, our beloved canines remained by our side, even accompanying us on flights. Remarkably, the Keeshond lived a fulfilling 14 years, while the smaller Pomeranian reached 12 years. Both managed to evade any severe health issues throughout their lives.
Both children and adults have to make a thoughtful decision when choosing to have a pet, as it requires a commitment of time and energy. It’s our responsibility to ensure their daily care and welfare, as their lives depend on us. Pets can be categorized into two types. One, like tropical fish, allows us to derive pleasure from observing them. The other, like dogs, can interact with us, and we’ll need to take the time to know them. Regardless of the category, we should know the natural lifespan of the pets and be prepared to spend the coming years together. Once we adopt them, we must keep them safe and in good health. Living alongside other creatures allows us to appreciate the finite nature of life.
To share our lives with pets under the same roof is a beautiful thing.
